All houses we rent are licensed to rent in Cuba and are perfectly legal. We also offer support and special opportunities for US-citizens.
In Havana and, in general, in Cuba, there is two categories of private homes. The licensed ones and the unlicensed ones. The licensed homes / houses are legal : the home owner has to pay monthly to the cuban gouvernment and in this manner he/she can rent his/her home without any problem. The only inconvenient is that he/she must to pay even while he/she doesn'rent. The unlicensed homes / houses are illegal in Cuba. The home owner is renting his/her home, but he/she accepts to risk and doesn't pay for any license. The inconvenient is that if gouvernment's inspectors discover that, the owner will have to pay 1500 CUC of penality and, in addition of that, he/she risks to lose his/her home. When this occur, the tourist must leave the house immediately and he/she will be forced to go in an hotel (much more expensive than private homes). Sometimes, the tourist has to pay a penality as well and it risk to be unwanted in Cuba.
The unlicensed homes are less expensive than the licensed ones but much more dangerous and absolutely illegal. For this reason, we don't have unlicensed homes in our site. We do not promote or suggest them. Furthermore, the difference in the price is not so big. In licensed homes, you have also more confort, more conditions and more security against thefts. The owners are there protecting yourself and your personal goods (they must do that) and at the same time, you have all the privacy that you expect. You can invite native girls and friends in the home (you cannot do that in a hotel) and you can order the home owners to prepare a cooking or a drinks, or you can do that yourself. So, definitively it worth better to rent a licensed home.
Sure, private homes in Cuba, are not as luxurious and confortable as an hotel. But private homes in Cuba costs half or even less of the price of an hotel. There, you have more opportunities to discover the "real" and "true" Cuba and to live an unespected and more adventurous vacation. The cuban people are very friendly and you will never feel alone in Cuba.
